Oxford University has ‘a lot to be immodest about’, says vice-chancellor

The institution has been characterised as unassuming by its senior leadership, yet is exercising considerable influence over the country’s trajectory.

During her annual address, Professor Irene Tracey considered how the university affects national identity, economic development, and advancement, drawing a comparison to the Bayeux Tapestry’s capacity for narrative.

According to Professor Tracey, presenting Oxford’s significance presents a challenge due to its extensive scope and depth.

She noted that after four decades of association with the institution, she continues to be impressed by one particularly endearing characteristic of Oxford’s character: its self-effacing nature, which she described as unusual given the considerable achievements worthy of pride.

She stated that the university possesses extensive resources to contribute towards shaping Britain’s identity during this significant moment in shared history.

Referencing a recent journey to view the Bayeux Tapestry, she equated Oxford’s function within Britain to that of the unidentified artisans responsible for the famous embroidered cloth.

Professor Tracey observed that the Bayeux Tapestry’s creators remain anonymous, yet their work has proved fundamental in recounting the story of a nation at a turning point in establishing a fresh sense of self.

She explained that Oxford, through its governance, principles, instruction, and scholarship, supplies the materials and illumination enabling students, staff, and collaborators to continue adding to the nation’s fabric, its developing character as a place marked by aspiration, achievement, compassion, and optimism.

She also highlighted Oxford’s standing as the highest-ranked university globally and its contribution to scientific advancement, economic prosperity, and employment through commercial ventures originating from research conducted at the institution.
