A public consultation process has commenced regarding a traffic filtering initiative aimed at addressing congestion issues in Oxford.
Oxfordshire County Council initiated the six-month consultation on September 28, requesting input from residents, businesses, and organisations throughout Oxfordshire.
This trial, which supersedes Oxford’s former temporary congestion charge, curtails vehicle entry at six strategic points via a permitting arrangement.
Gareth Epps, the cabinet member responsible for transport at Oxfordshire County Council, expressed that the traffic filtering trial represents a subsequent phase in addressing longstanding traffic problems within the city.
He indicated a desire to assess the effects of the trial and review responses from residents, organisations, and businesses.
Epps stated that community perspectives and experiences would inform future proposals for enhancing travel and transportation within and surrounding Oxford.
The consultation seeks information on whether the filters have altered travel patterns and requests proposals for potential adjustments to the scheme.
The trial received approval in November 2022 but experienced postponement stemming from the closure of Botley Road.
Unlike the preceding congestion charge, motorists cannot make payments to access restricted routes; vehicles entering without authorisation face a £70 penalty.
This amount decreases to £35 if settled within three weeks.
The filtering system employs automatic number plate recognition technology to monitor compliance.
Throughout the initial six-month period of the trial, individuals found in violation for the first time will receive a caution rather than a financial penalty.
The initiative pertains exclusively to cars, with twenty categories of permits available for those qualifying for exemptions, including caregivers and community health personnel.
The consultation will accept responses until March 28, 2027.
Submissions may be made through the online portal or via paper forms available at County Hall and Oxfordshire library locations.
