Since summer of the previous year, England flags have appeared on Oxfordshire’s roundabouts, lampposts, and some mini roundabout surfaces.

It came to light in January that Oxfordshire County Council expended £14,800 to remove 332 flags throughout the county – approximately £44 per flag.

The council had previously cautioned the public that placing flags or painting them on or near roadways could result in “serious safety hazards.”

Locations in Oxfordshire where flags have been positioned include the Headington Roundabout in Oxford alongside towns like Abingdon, Didcot, and Wantage.

Mini roundabouts at Marcham Road and Ock Street featured painted St George flags in August, during the peak of the movement.

The council has acknowledged receiving in excess of 200 complaints concerning Union Jack and St George’s flags affixed to lampposts.

During January, Oxford Labour councillor Susanna Pressel was recorded in secret urging police to “lie in wait and nab the b******* who are reinstalling them so quickly.”

This sparked controversy, though activists subsequently visited her street and hoisted additional flags, prompting safety concerns for Ms Pressel.

The Oxfordshire Raise the Colours group recently posted on social media: “It is the council taking our flags down, we will not surrender, we will always find a way to stop you.”

According to Oxfordshire County Council, workmen concealing their identities with face coverings have faced “aggressive behaviour” from certain individuals while removing the flags.
