Oxfordshire’s fire and rescue service has launched a recruitment campaign for full-time firefighters as part of a new hiring initiative.
The service aims to expand its permanent workforce through standard recruitment drives, bringing in new staff to fill positions vacated by those who have retired or moved to other roles due to promotions or transfers.
Full-time firefighter posts typically generate considerable interest, with hiring for these positions occurring infrequently. The previous recruitment campaign took place in spring 2024.
Job seekers can take part in three online question-and-answer sessions planned for Wednesday, March 26, between 7pm and 8pm, and on Monday, March 30, at both 12.30pm and 6.30pm.
Matt Chapman, assistant chief fire officer at Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service, explained that joining the fire and rescue service opens up many opportunities that many people never get to experience.
He noted that through comprehensive training programmes, individuals develop new skills, face varied and challenging situations, and make a real difference throughout their careers.
The service is looking for people who care about others and are willing to help support local communities.
Chapman emphasised that being a firefighter involves much more than most people realise, requiring specific personal qualities, strong teamwork, and commitment.
Whole-time firefighters regularly engage with members of the public, including elderly residents and young people, through educational talks, home visits, and community outreach activities.
According to Chapman, what unites their excellent teams is independence, confidence, empathy, enthusiasm, teamwork, and the ability to handle any emergency.
At present, 222 whole-time firefighters work across Oxfordshire, based at six fire stations.
Emergency crews have responded to more than 5,000 incidents over the past twelve months.
