A mental health professional has received recognition for his work supporting both service users and colleagues.
Joel Hawkins works as an academic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy supervisor and practitioner within the Oxfordshire Eating Disorders Community Team. He was awarded the Exceptional People Individual Award for February.
Prior to moving into his role as a CBT therapist, Mr Hawkins served as modern matron. He has accumulated thirty years of experience in Adult Eating Disorders.
Mr Hawkins said that 2026 marks his thirtieth year working in Adult Eating Disorders, which makes this acknowledgement especially significant. Adult Eating Disorders has been and remains his career focus. He has been privileged to work alongside exceptional colleagues and clients throughout his professional life, and this accolade belongs to them as much as to him.
He was nominated for the award by Estelle Hyde, who holds the position of clinical nurse lead at Cotswold House Marlborough.
Ms Hyde described Mr Hawkins as an exceptional role model who combines clinical accuracy with leadership and compassion.
She noted that Mr Hawkins had strengthened her academic confidence through his encouraging mentorship, helping her advance from holding a nursing diploma to producing academic publications.
Ms Hyde said that Joel has had a significant impact on their supervision group, which has led to patients receiving tailored support from each supervisee. For patients, his commitment to adhering to CBT protocols and NICE guidelines ensures they receive high-quality, evidence-based care specifically suited to their needs. He demonstrates confidence, warmth and intuition, combining his clinical knowledge with hands-on leadership. When circumstances require it, he shows bravery and directness, setting clear boundaries while remaining supportive and emotionally available.
