A fresh scheme allowing pupils to travel to school together on foot has launched, providing a healthier and safer alternative for reaching the classroom.
The initiative began on Monday, March 23, when the very first Walking Bus departed from the Woodgreen Council Offices in Witney and finished at Witney Community Primary School.
Learners have the option to join the group at predetermined spots along the route and travel to school alongside adult supervisors.
Councillor Rachel Crouch, holding the portfolio for stronger, healthy communities, stated that it was delightful to observe the youngsters conversing, giggling and relishing the trip together.
Despite the idea being simple, it genuinely makes a difference.
Parents and children can spend time together, pupils arrive at school ready for the day, and the community gains from roads that are quieter and safer.
Presented as a pedestrian equivalent of a bus service, the Walking Bus initiative looks to encourage consistent physical activity, build self-esteem and cut down on vehicle numbers near schools.
It also gives young people the chance to forge friendships and commence their school day in a relaxed atmosphere.
A volunteer who joined the inaugural walk noted that it made the morning considerably more tranquil and agreeable.
It represents an excellent way to start the day, and witnessing the children feel part of something was touching.
One child who took part said it resembles an adventure.
The Walking Bus will now run on every school day, with paths tailored to accommodate participating families, and extra routes could be added if there is sufficient interest.
This scheme forms part of the council’s wider approach to promote better wellbeing and environmentally sustainable travel throughout the area.
