A probe has been initiated after officers found a wandering dog in woodland close to the border separating Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Police constables Dollery and Kamalee, members of the Thames Valley Rural Crime Taskforce, were alerted and dispatched to intercept an animal travelling along the road linking Kingston Blount to Stokenchurch on the night of April 2.

Officials have classified the creature as a Cane Corso and are working to trace its keeper while establishing how the pet came to be left alone in the trees.

The constabulary stated that the officers invested time in winning over the animal’s trust and eventually managed to fit a lead and reach a dog warden.

They expressed gratitude for help from a nearby inhabitant who supplied fresh poultry, which further helped build rapport with the creature, which grew difficult once restrained.

The officers remained with the animal, verified to be a Cane Corso, for a duration of 2 hours while waiting for the warden to arrive.

Unfortunately the dog seems to be lacking proper weight and requires treatment, and has since been taken by the warden for suitable care.

The animal has undergone scanning and carries a microchip, with no reported theft, though should no keeper be found the dog may become available for rehoming.

The constabulary added that any enquiries should be directed to South Oxfordshire Council’s dog warden service.
