A skate park that only recently resumed operations in Witney has been targeted by vandals, resulting in what officials describe as costly destruction.

Witney Town Council has spoken out against those who damaged Leys Skatepark, which had been reopened just one week earlier on Saturday, March 28 after renovation work.

Officers from Thames Valley Police have been asked to look into the matter.

A council spokesperson said the recent vandalism had been carried out by a few individuals acting selfishly, and the damage would require significant expenditure to restore and clean up. It was disappointing that such behaviour could affect a facility meant to be available and inclusive for everyone, the spokesperson added. Temporary closure might be necessary for repairs, which was unfortunate given the skatepark had only just reopened after being shut to allow the Courtside hub project to proceed.

The council is asking anyone who noticed anything suspicious to get in touch with Thames Valley Police, quoting reference 43260157083. By looking out for each other, the community could help protect this valued facility for all users, the spokesperson said.

A Thames Valley Police representative confirmed that a report had been received concerning criminal damage at the Skate Park in Witney. The destruction occurred overnight between Monday (30/3) and Tuesday (31/3), affecting a number of fence panels and chairs. No one has been arrested so far and the investigation remains active.
