Peace campaigners rally at Oxfordshire military installation

Approximately one hundred protesters, among them people from Oxford, converged on a peaceful demonstration site to set up a barrier at an RAF station in Suffolk.

The protest at RAF Lakenheath took place after reports emerged that an American fighter jet that was shot down in Iran on April 3 had taken off from the British base.

Authorities have stated that two people were arrested in the vicinity of Lakenheath during Saturday’s April 4 demonstrations against the Iran conflict, although neither individual had ties to Oxfordshire.

Those in attendance comprised Ginnie Herbert from Cholsey close to Wallingford, alongside Avril Alexander, Sally Reynolds, and Carol Starvis, all based in Oxford.

Peter Lux, speaking on behalf of the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, maintained that RAF bases ought to be held responsible when authorising American aircraft to depart from their airstrips.

According to Mr Lux, monitors have recorded somewhere between 116 and 118 American fighter bombers leaving the base in recent weeks.

He stated that it is unquestionably an RAF base, it falls under sovereign territory, and therefore Britain bears legal responsibility for activities conducted at that location.

Saturday’s blockade formed part of a six-day peaceful camp featuring around-the-clock presence at the base’s entrance, due to end on April 6.

Protesters submitted a letter to Lakenheath’s commanding officers at the beginning of the peaceful camp outlining worries about disrespect for international law by the RAF and their objection to the United States Air Force’s use of British bases.

Mr Lux observed that they require accountability from these installations, particularly in light of developments in Iran, which the British Government has indicated concerns about due to international law.

Craig Raeside, a former service member with 14 years with the Royal Engineers, was present at the Lakenheath blockade on Saturday to show his backing.

He declared that veterans understand these matters, that they receive training on Rules of Engagement, the Geneva Convention, and the Genocide Convention, and that the United States and Israel have consistently disregarded every provision concerning civilian infrastructure, property, and individuals. He said they have an obligation to voice opposition and need not await court proceedings to confirm what is evident to them.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson remarked that the United States serves as their primary defence and security collaborator, that they have permitted American use of British installations for particular and limited defensive operations within collective self-defence of their regional partners and to protect British lives, and that any proposed American operation originating from a base on British soil is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
