A property established four hundred years ago on the edge of Oxfordshire has come up for sale after closing its doors.

The Cartwright Hotel stands on Croughton Road in Aynho, a short distance from Banbury, and is being offered by Fisher German via an internet auction platform.

This follows the business shutting down a year ago because of financial difficulties, according to Banbury FM.

The radio station reported that the venue originally functioned as a coaching inn called the Red Lion before the Cartwright family purchased Aynho village in 1615.

The family took control of the establishment, and during the 1800s it became the Cartwright Arms.

After falling into disrepair throughout the 1990s, new owners undertook renovation work and the venue reopened under the Cartwright Hotel name in 2008.

The property, which holds mostly Grade II listed protection, is now on the market having been closed for twelve months.

No guide price has been announced, though planning permission has been granted for the 0.34-acre site to create four residential homes, though construction has not yet begun.

The listing states that in line with approved planning, the pub or restaurant layout remains attractive with room for fifty guests, three letting rooms each with en-suite facilities, a two-bedroom flat for the manager, a commercial kitchen, lavatories and storage spaces.

The eating area contains a commercial kitchen, reception, wine cellar, toilets and a public bar.

Planning permission exists to build four independent residential units on the premises, presenting a substantial development opportunity.
