A teacher from Oxford is seeking to overturn her teaching ban, with a professional conduct panel scheduled to convene later this month.
Anne Vendy served as head of geography at Wheatley Park School near Oxford before receiving a teaching prohibition in 2014 for submitting GCSE coursework marks that bore no resemblance to the actual work submitted.
At the time of her dismissal, she was 35 years old. She was terminated from Wheatley Park School after submitting three missing 2012 marks in March 2013, which prompted a school investigation.
She began working at the school in September 2004 and was appointed head of geography in September 2010.
In 2014, a National College for Teaching and Leadership professional conduct panel determined that Ms Vendy also permitted students to take home assignments that were supposed to be completed under supervised conditions.
More than ten years later, a professional misconduct panel will meet on April 28 to review her request to lift the prohibition order.
A 2014 report regarding the panel’s findings stated that Ms Vendy’s behavior involved sustained and repeated dishonesty.
She acknowledged nine allegations, including allowing pupils to take controlled assessment work home, though she stated she did not expressly authorize this practice.
She also admitted to submitting controlled assessment marks for six students that did not reflect the quality of their work.
One student reported having the work at home when grades were submitted, indicating that Ms Vendy could not have realistically marked the assignments.
An unnamed witness noted that another student’s mark bore no resemblance to the work produced and should have been 15 marks rather than the 28 marks awarded.
The panel learned that work submitted by student B was identical to that of student A, who were not friends and both stated in statements that they had not copied each other.
Ms Vendy acknowledged accusing student B of cheating and stated that student B was now in considerable difficulty because Ms Vendy had assisted them.
The report concluded that Ms Vendy’s conduct fell significantly short of the standards expected of the teaching profession.
Ms Vendy, who was not present or represented at the hearing, was found to have demonstrated unacceptable professional conduct, and the panel recommended a ban with potential for future review.
The secretary of state for education’s office commented on the ban, stating that three years would provide sufficient time to develop and demonstrate insight and remorse.
Kate Curtis, headteacher of Wheatley Park School in 2013, stated that the leadership and governors examined the case thoroughly and expressed satisfaction that due to the school’s vigilance, the matters raised were addressed without any student’s GCSE results being affected.
The students’ work required remarking and resubmission, though this did not impact their final grades.
