A person was reportedly attacked while removing a flag from a post in Wallingford, with police having arrested one individual linked to the case.

The alleged assault took place on Wednesday, April 15th, along Oxford Road in Wallingford at around 11am.

Dashcam footage secured by SWNS captured officers detaining a 45-year-old man on suspicion of assault in Benson shortly after the event.

The reported victim, a man in his fifties, apparently suffered no physical harm.

According to Thames Valley Police, officers received notification just before 11am on Wednesday regarding an assault without injuries occurrence in Oxford Road, Wallingford. A 45-year-old man from Wallingford was detained on suspicion of assault by beating and has since been released on conditional police bail. The victim, a man in his fifties, did not suffer any injuries. Anyone who observed the occurrence was encouraged to share any information by contacting 101 or submitting an online report, citing reference number 43260182270.

This comes as tensions rise within the community over the display of Union Jack and St George’s Flags.

In February, this publication reported how residents in the area perceived the flags as emblems of hate, racism and intimidation and misuse of a national symbol.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Raise The Colours movement, which gained prominence nationwide last summer, rejected these accusations and indicated they were flying flags to demonstrate against illegal immigration.

On March 30th, Oxfordshire County Council issued a formal legal notice to Raise The Colours ordering them to stop positioning flags throughout the county.

Nevertheless, social media posts alongside several witness accounts suggest the group continues its activities. Oxfordshire County Council declined to comment.
