A World War Two-era aircraft has been placed on the market at a private airfield close to Abingdon, with a price tag of £75,000.
The 1944 Piper L-4H ‘Grasshopper’, bearing the registration G-CMIZ, is available through the international aviation sales platform Sprinkle and is situated in South Oxfordshire.
This machine was originally constructed for the US Army Air Forces and entered operational use in August 1944. Records indicate it was deployed with General George S. Patton’s 3rd Army during the concluding push into Nazi-occupied Europe.
This particular model of lightweight observation plane performed vital duties in reconnaissance and artillery spotting operations throughout the Second World War, the advertisement states, operating near the front lines during some of the conflict’s most significant engagements.
The aircraft took part in the Battle of the Bulge and missions surrounding Bastogne, and flew across the Rhine as the Allied forces moved toward Czechoslovakia before remaining stationed in Germany until hostilities ceased.
After its military career, the aircraft changed hands to private owners in Belgium, was located in Germany during the 1980s, and subsequently returned to flying status in America.
From 2021 through to 2025 the plane underwent extensive restoration work, featuring fresh fabric covering and a recreation of its original 87th Infantry Battalion livery.
It currently operates from a private airstrip in South Oxfordshire, close to Abingdon, with an asking price of £75,000.
