New planting containers have been installed at Castle Gardens in Wallingford.

The town council arranged the placement following recommendations from Historic England. The aim was to protect the historic site by preventing cyclists from riding down the Castle Bank slope, which threatens the old earthworks.

A spokesperson for the council explained that the original suggestion involved using wooden barriers, but officials felt a better solution was available.

These containers serve that purpose while also improving how the area looks.

They are not meant to stop people from enjoying the gardens.

The council pointed out that the gardens hold status as a protected ancient monument, and they have a duty to help preserve them.

Over the coming weeks and months, the containers will be filled with plants that will bring colour to the area and offer shelter for wildlife such as bees and butterflies.
