The mysterious reason Oxfordshire residents keep spotting historic faces

Blenheim Palace has extended its major exhibition honouring one of England’s most celebrated architects after a peculiar sighting in the nearby town.

Sir John Vanbrugh, the celebrated designer behind the Oxfordshire baroque masterpiece, reportedly made an appearance through modern Woodstock’s streets, observed carefully using pedestrian crossings, carrying shopping bags, and pausing at a café for refreshment.

The unexpected encounter coincided with ongoing showings of the Blueprints of Power display, which investigates the professional journey and cultural significance of the individual who was described as the rockstar of the English Baroque in architectural circles.

Organisers confirmed the exhibition would continue welcoming visitors through the spring of 2026, with May 31 marking the final date.

A palace spokesperson indicated that visitors would retain the chance to engage with the interactive showcase, which demonstrates Vanbrugh’s architectural prowess, up until that same deadline.

The presentation traces his development from dramatic writing into the field of construction, while also examining his partnership with Sarah Churchill, who held the title of first Duchess of Marlborough.

Each space within what has been called Britain’s Greatest Palace pays tribute to Vanbrugh’s diverse contributions as both designer and dramatist, alongside his roles as military man, intelligence agent, court figure and diplomatic representative.

The atmospheric appearance of the historical figure through contemporary streets confirmed the continuation of the Blueprints of Power display, celebrating the extraordinary legacy of the visionary who conceived this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Entry to the exhibition necessitates either a regular daytime ticket or an all-encompassing pass to Britain’s Greatest Palace.

Complete information about the display and the estate, including booking arrangements, is available via the Blenheim Palace online platform.
