Oxford’s historic church welcomes Italian organ following successful fundraising campaign

Published on

A centuries-old Oxford church is preparing to welcome a fresh instrument from Italy following the completion of a money-raising effort.

The target of £750,000 for the organ was set after St Giles’ Church initiated Project 900 in 2020, with the financial objective now virtually accomplished.

The initiative was launched to mark the church’s 900th anniversary, and with the funding nearly secured, renowned Italian organ builders Mascioni are preparing to construct and fit their very first organ in this country in 2028.

The church’s director of music, Nicholas Prozzillo, explained that St Giles’ functions as a centre for organ instruction and recitals, and with four thriving choirs alongside more than 35 organ students, the church is playing a role in safeguarding England’s cherished religious music tradition.

Alumni from St Giles’ occupy organ and choral posts at higher education institutions in Cambridge and Oxford, and Dr Prozzillo expects the new instrument will further enhance the church’s musical provision.

The church’s vicar, Daniel Walters, has formalised the contract for the organ.

He noted that the commitment to delivering excellent music tuition and performance opportunities is already making a difference to young people in Oxford from varied backgrounds.

He added that a new organ will complement the current programmes, and there are plans to provide accessible training and performances that suit family commitments.

The congregation is actively looking for additional singers and organists, and will hold a complimentary Singing Afternoon on May 16 for youngsters aged six and above who are curious about choral music.
