Ancient China fossils show complex life emerged far earlier than scientists thought

A team of researchers in China has found fossil remains that are reshaping our understanding of when intricate animal life began to exist on Earth.

The investigation brought together experts from Oxford University’s Museum of Natural History and Department of Earth Sciences alongside colleagues from Yunnan University.

The results demonstrate that advanced animal life forms existed at a minimum of four million years prior to what earlier research had suggested.

Scientists collected more than 700 fossil samples from the Jiangchuan Biota site in Yunnan Province, with these specimens dating between 554 and 539 million years of age.

The collection represents a diverse community from the latter part of the Ediacaran period, displaying organisms and species that experts previously believed only emerged during the Cambrian explosion, which happened approximately 539 million years ago.

Dr Gaorong Li, the lead scientist on the project, explained that the discovery fills a substantial gap in comprehending the initial phases of animal evolution.

For the first time, evidence demonstrates that many complex creatures, which have typically been linked solely to the Cambrian period, were actually present during the Ediacaran, suggesting they arose considerably earlier than fossil records had previously indicated.

The assemblage contains what appear to be the earliest known predecessors of deuterostomes, the evolutionary lineage that includes humans and all animals possessing backbones.

The dig site also produced ancient relatives of starfish, acorn worms, and several other unusual life forms.

Dr Frankie Dunn, a co-researcher from Oxford University Museum of Natural History, noted that discovering these ambulacrarians within Ediacaran strata is especially exciting.

Specimens representing archaic relatives of starfish and sea cucumbers have already been recognised, and work continues to locate further examples.

Associate Professor Luke Parry from Oxford University pointed out that the discoveries provide a rare glimpse into a transitional ecosystem representing the very dawn of animal evolutionary history.
