A man has been named after being jailed for choking his own mother to death.

Callum Hunter, who lives in Goldsmiths Lane, Wallingford, was handed his punishment at Oxford Crown Court last month.

The defendant faced multiple counts connected to events that occurred in Wallingford in early February this year.

Hunter pleaded guilty to breaching a non-contact order, deliberate suffocation, and driving without valid coverage.

The court was told that the victim in the case is the defendant’s mother.

Alexandra Bushell, acting as the crown prosecutor, explained that Hunter had been bound by a court order preventing him from communicating with his mother ever since a harassment conviction in December the year before.

Because of this, Hunter had been residing at his grandmother’s property, although his mother would sometimes drop by.

Ms Bushell explained that during one specific visit, Mrs Hunter caught her son consuming illegal substances and the two began arguing.

The lawyer stated that he seized her throat with both hands and pushed her into the living room.

The court was told that Mrs Hunter felt compelled to shield her own elderly parent and her sibling from the defendant.

Ms Bushell added that he violently slammed the front door and kicked it out of frustration, and that this behaviour caused considerable fear and distress.

Judge Ian Pringle KC stated that he had appeared before the court on multiple occasions regarding issues involving his mother, that there was a confrontation and he strangled her, and that this behaviour was completely unacceptable and truly deplorable.

Hunter was given an 18-month custodial sentence and a court order banning him from approaching his grandmother’s house.

He also had six points added to his driving licence.
