An Oxford man with a history of criminal behaviour has received a custodial sentence following attacks on two officers at Banbury Police Station, a court has been told.

Ali Bero, who lives on Rymers Lane in Oxford, faced sentencing at Oxford Crown Court on Monday 20 April.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting emergency workers, one count of criminal damage, and possessing both class A and class B substances, namely cocaine and cannabis.

The offences took place on 7 and 8 February. The drug possession happened in Oxford, while the other incidents took place at Banbury Police Station.

Bero composed a letter offering his apologies to the officers.

In it, he expressed sincere regret for his behaviour, explaining that he had been anxious and upset about people who had previously harmed him.

He also said he felt ashamed of what he had done and requested that they forgive his poor conduct.

The court was told that Bero carried out these acts while under the influence of alcohol and revealed that he had been stabbed two months earlier.

The court heard that Bero, who took part in the hearing via video link from custody, had been held for two months and 11 days.

Judge Ian Pringle KC observed that Bero had amassed 19 previous convictions comprising roughly 50 separate offences.

Bero was handed a five-month prison term, and the drugs were directed to be seized.
