Oxford house fire sends thick smoke into sky

Thick plumes of black smoke billowed skyward as flames consumed a home.

A minimum of six fire appliances hastened to Launton Road in Bicester to tackle a fire which had begun in a garage.

When firefighters reached the scene, they discovered flames pouring from the garage doorway and the adjacent property.

The road was shut by officials for a number of hours as crews fought the flames, with the incident first called in at around midday on Friday, 24 April.

Officers urged civilians to avoid the area.

The fire service stated that no one needed to be rescued by firefighters and would not say whether any residents had already left before the fire appliances arrived.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that nobody sustained injuries.

A spokesperson indicated that Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service took the emergency call at 12.35pm on Friday 24 April 2026, sending six fire engines from Bicester, Kidlington, Rewley Road, Slade, Thame and Buckingham fire stations, along with a hydraulic platform from Rewley Road, to the Launton Road location in Bicester.

Crews were dispatched to deal with reports of a garage fire which had spread to a neighbouring house. They are using hose reels to get the fire under control.

A person who witnessed the scene said police had blocked off that section of Launton Road, meaning even those on foot had to find another way through.

Another person said it was devastating for that family. While losing belongings and a house was terrible, they just hoped everyone was safe.
