The water company has released a statement after a burst pipe incident that resulted in the closure of a school in Oxfordshire and created problems for nearby businesses and householders.

The water supplier reported that work on the damaged main, first spotted on Monday morning, was completed at 8pm this evening.

The incident occurred close to Sutton Courtenay Lane, with company tankers reaching the site around 8.30am on Monday.

Water supplies were cut off to commercial premises and households in settlements near Abingdon, encompassing Sutton Courtenay and Milton, and CofE Primary School in Milton Hill was shut to all students on Monday.

Thames Water staff on-site discovered the fractured pipe and commenced isolation procedures at approximately 9.15am on Monday, with certain water supplies redirected through the network to minimise inconvenience for those experiencing no running water.

A later statement confirmed that customers should now have water flowing again, although pressure may remain lower than usual.

A Thames Water spokesperson indicated that a repair has been completed but further work is required, and local people should expect another update tomorrow.

A spokesperson stated that a temporary repair has now been finished, and thanks to tanker assistance, water service has been reinstated. This interim solution enables the company to maintain supply for customers while preparing for the subsequent phase. This next stage will involve placing a specialized valve, which enables staff to safely regulate water flow and conduct the complete repair more efficiently. Work to install this valve will commence tomorrow once the necessary components have been ordered and arrive.
