An independent school in Oxford has revealed a major development scheme featuring numerous construction initiatives currently being developed.
The headmaster of St Edward’s School on Woodstock Road has detailed the school’s forthcoming building timetable, encompassing new sporting provisions and extensions to its science departments.
Alastair Chirnside, representing the boarding section for pupils aged 13, stated proposals were awaiting local authority endorsement.
The main proposal concerns land currently functioning as a golf course, where plans envision creating new grass pitches for football and rugby.
Separately, a new athletics track and artificial surface are proposed for a different nearby location.
Mr Chirnside noted the school aimed to preserve substantial portions of the golf course, including the natural landscape and especially mature trees on the property.
He added the school also wanted to create additional pitches for rugby, football and cricket, driven by the desire to accommodate all girls’ teams.
St Edward’s has operated as a mixed school for four decades, and the headmaster is committed to ensuring the school’s ethos and facilities serve female pupils equally with males.
The school also plans to erect a new sports centre, incorporating a flexible indoor arena together with an indoor rowing facility and reception area.
Mr Chirnside observed the proposals would deliver excellent provisions for pupils, while also offering significant benefits to Oxford’s local community.
The indoor hockey court of national standard, intended for inclusion in the development, will be accessible to community clubs, as will the rowing tank.
According to the headmaster, the vision centred on creating facilities serving both pupils and generating fresh prospects in Oxford for young people.
Before the announcement, delegates from more than thirty state schools, charities and sports clubs attended a presentation on the plans and contributed views on what they hoped to achieve.
Non-sporting elements received consideration as well, with the school additionally examining possibilities for an open-air performance venue alongside ecological zones for environmental education.
The theatre will supplement the school’s existing partnership with The North Wall performing arts centre in Summertown, while the new sports facilities will build upon the school’s association with Chelsea FC, a connection disclosed earlier this year.
If all progresses as expected, Mr Chirnside indicated building work should commence later this year.
The school also aims to expand its science departments on the eastern side of Woodstock Road, a resource that will be accessible to young people beyond the pupil population.
The headmaster noted the school was currently undergoing substantial investment, benefiting not only pupils but also serving the Oxford community.
