Travellers using Chiltern Railways services faced disruption this morning after an equipment problem caused trains to stop along the line running between the capital and Oxford.

The defective rolling stock became immobilised in the section between Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield on Wednesday morning (April 29), halting all movements in the direction of Oxford and Banbury.

The affected section spans from London Marylebone through to Gerrards Cross, High Wycombe, Princes Risborough, Oxford, Banbury, Birmingham Moor Street and further stops beyond.

The rail operator has indicated that trains running between these stations could either be cancelled entirely or delayed by as much as 40 minutes.

Normal running is expected to be restored by 10.15am based on current estimates.

A spokesperson for Chiltern Railways stated that following the train developing a fault between Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield, the line towards Oxford would be back in operation shortly.

The company expressed regret for any disruption caused to passengers’ journeys. Customers who experienced delays of 15 minutes or more may be eligible for compensation.

Several services heading towards Oxford have already been removed from today’s timetable, including the 8.11am departure from London Marylebone, which was scheduled to reach Oxford at 9.35am, along with the 8.20am, 8.45am and 9.04am services departing from Oxford towards the London terminus.

Passengers can travel on selected alternative services without paying extra, including those operated by Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Carousel buses, the Elizabeth Line, Great Western Railway Services, London Underground and Stagecoach Buses.
