Opponents of a government bid to outlaw trail hunting have mobilised in large numbers across the Cotswolds region, flooding both official channels and constituency offices with expressions of concern.
The proposed ban is currently undergoing a period of public consultation, with countryside campaigners warning that the measure could devastate rural economies by over £100 million each year and jeopardise the livelihoods of around one thousand families.
Trail hunting involves packs of dogs following a synthetic scent derived from animal products rather than pursuing a live quarry, and developed as an alternative activity following the implementation of the 2004 hunting prohibition.
Countryside Alliance chief executive Tim Bonner expressed strong criticism of the initiative, arguing that in an era when rural communities are already struggling with poorly designed government policies and a cost of living squeeze exacerbated by geopolitical instability, ministers have once again singled out countryside populations for another attack on traditional practices. He contended that banning trail hunting would be disproportionate, baseless, and unjust.
The consultation exercise, which opened during the preceding month, will accept responses up until June 18.
The Countryside Alliance has teamed up with the British Hound Sports Association through the Future for Hunting campaign to urge members of the public to submit their opinions.
Mr Bonner further suggested that the proposal represented merely a governmental distraction tactic designed to divert attention from the real issues impacting British households. He noted that voters are worried about the future of rural areas, food security, and the affordability of energy rather than culture war controversies.
He also raised concerns about the Labour Party’s relationship with countryside constituents, warning that persisting with this course of action would only deepen the perception among rural residents that Labour holds skewed priorities and fundamental opposition to countryside Britain.
