A Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon met with the Health Secretary to discuss proposals for a new development to replace Summertown Health Centre in the northern sector of Oxford.

Layla Moran and her political party have devoted considerable time to campaigning for modern healthcare facilities to replace the existing Edwardian structure, which no longer meets the requirements of the area’s growing population.

Ms Moran stated that she valued the opportunity to update the Secretary of State on the circumstances surrounding Summertown Health Centre.

She expressed optimism that Wes and his officials had now been informed about the situation, and she welcomed his assurance that he would examine the matter further.

She emphasised that this did not represent an ending to the campaign, and that efforts would continue to obtain a fresh, sustainable resolution for the long-term future of the facility.

During their exchange, Ms Moran highlighted the challenges involved in securing ring-fenced financial allocations for NHS construction projects and the complications arising from the District Valuer’s role in assessing the economic viability of potential sites.

Mr Streeting recognised the validity of Ms Moran’s concerns and confirmed his intention to hold additional talks with NHS England and local health system partners to explore every possible avenue for funding a replacement facility.

Ms Moran has formed a collaborative group consisting of Oxford City Council, Thames Valley ICB, and representatives from the local community to address the issue.

She plans to convene the group once more to share the results of the meeting and decide on next steps.
