A motorist has been detected travelling at 116mph on the M40 in the northern part of Oxfordshire.

Officers from Thames Valley Police have been monitoring the stretch of motorway between Junctions 9 and 10 in recent days, and they recorded no fewer than 154 instances of excess speed.

One of these drivers was measured at 116mph, with police using social media platforms on Monday, May 18 to announce the detections.

According to Thames Valley Police, officers monitored the M40 section between Junction 9 and Junction 10 where 154 speeding incidents were detected, including one at 116mph.

Within a fortnight of a vehicle being caught speeding, the registered owner will receive notification of intended prosecution along with a section 172 form.

Speed limits exist for a purpose, and breaking them is against the law.

The least severe consequence for speeding is a fixed penalty of £100 together with three penalty points on the driving licence.
