A candidate linked to Oxford University is preparing to take on Nigel Farage in the Clacton by-election.

The Reform UK leader declared on Tuesday July 7 that he would stand down as a member of parliament but contest the resulting by-election.

His decision followed sustained pressure regarding undisclosed hospitality and financial arrangements prior to his initial election.

The politician insists he has acted properly, stating that residents of Clacton ought to evaluate his conduct after suggesting that journalists and rival parties were involved in a coordinated establishment campaign against him.

The major Westminster parties have indicated they will not participate in the race, with Mr Farage’s most prominent challenger expected to be the masked satirical candidate Count Binface, though former actor Laurence Fox has also signalled possible participation.

Count Binface has contested numerous elections, most recently the 2026 Makerfield by-election which was won by Andy Burnham.

He identifies as the ruler of the Recyclons from the planet Sigma IX and claims an age exceeding 5,900 years.

When launching his campaign, the bin-themed candidate stated he would serve as a unity figurehead and committed to constructing at least one affordable dwelling.

He added that Mr Farage advocates for the public against the establishment, declaring his willingness to handle the matter personally.

Count Binface is a persona invented by Jonathan David Harvey, an Oxford graduate who obtained a BA in classics and related language studies.

His professional profile indicates he has accumulated more than 117,000 votes across various contests, appeared on programmes including Have I Got News For You and been covered by The Washington Post.

Legally, MPs cannot simply quit and must instead accept an appointment from the Chancellor of the Exchequer as steward and bailiff of either the Chiltern Hundreds or the Manor of Northstead, ceremonial positions that prevent Commons membership.

Rachel Reeves confirmed she had granted Mr Farage’s request despite describing the situation as ridiculous and a transparent manoeuvre, arguing that Clacton residents merited more serious representation.

She continued that she would not prevent him from spending the summer in verbal conflict with a refuse container.

Count Binface featured on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this week, describing his mission as safeguarding British democratic principles.

He observed that the programme’s decision to interview him, given the absence of other party candidates, reflected more poorly on those parties than on himself.

He questioned whether other parties were avoiding engagement with an elderly bin-related character or believed Mr Farage was orchestrating a publicity stunt, noting he had delivered this observation with precision at 8.55 in the morning.
