Woodland private school in UK reveals name change

A fee-paying establishment in the Oxfordshire countryside, set within ten acres of forest, is undergoing a rebranding for the first time in over two decades of operation.

Previously known as Oxford Montessori School, the independent institution located in Elsfield on the outskirts of Oxford will adopt the name Oxford Millwood School.

To mark the occasion, the school is welcoming families and local residents to join festivities at a countryside-themed open day.

The decision to rename reflects the site’s historical and geographical character, acknowledging nearby milling heritage alongside the extensive woodland surroundings.

According to staff, some of the campus structures exhibit architecture reminiscent of the fictional academy featured in J.K. Rowling’s celebrated wizard series.

Katie Townsend, principal at Oxford Millwood School, expressed that the moment represents a landmark in the institution’s legacy of supporting young people across multiple generations. She explained that the new designation more accurately represents the countryside atmosphere where students pursue their studies, alongside an ambitious programme extending to GCSE-level qualifications. She noted that the wooded grounds allow lessons to incorporate natural elements across various disciplines while permitting students to develop at their individual pace. Parents and prospective pupils attending the open day would have the chance to tour the estate, discover the benefits of limited class sizes, explore customized educational routes, and understand the school’s approach to building self-assurance and mental health.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, running from 10am until 2pm. Attendees will be able to wander the grounds, participate in forest-based pursuits, witness a maypole dancing display, and receive information about the school’s Duke of Edinburgh involvement.

Prospective visitors should reserve places through the school website.

The non-selective institution, affiliated with the Blenheim Schools group, incorporates specialist provision for students with additional needs and delivers customized schooling for children from four to sixteen years old.

George, currently in Year 11, recalled that prior to enrolling he rarely spoke, but at this establishment felt genuinely supported by teachers wanting to understand and assist his learning. He pointed out that reduced group sizes meant his contributions gained recognition in lessons, allowing him to raise queries and voice perspectives. He welcomed the fresh school designation and expressed hope that the open day would help other young people appreciate the distinctive architecture and natural spaces available.
