A long-established independent school that has been operating for a century is shutting its doors and combining with another institution as student numbers continue to fall.
Rupert House in Henley will assume control of St Mary’s Prep School, which is also located in Henley, starting from the new term in September.
As many as 50 pupils and 11 employees from St Mary’s will transfer to Rupert House, an educational establishment that was established in 1924 with only 10 children.
St Mary’s Prep School will cease operations at the conclusion of the summer term following nearly a century of providing education.
According to the Henley Standard, conversations regarding the prospects of both institutions were conducted by Wishford Education Group, which owns both independent schools in Henley.
Stephen Blundell, the headteacher at St Mary’s, noted that private schools throughout the UK are experiencing difficult circumstances due to the introduction of value-added tax on fees, escalating energy expenses and reduced birth rates.
Charles Lowe, chair of governors, expressed that they are pleased to have identified Wishford as a collaborator who can fully achieve their goals for Rupert House and improve the exceptional education currently provided to students. He noted that the organisations share similar principles and are committed to maintaining their strong connections with the broader Henley community. Wishford offers the resources, administrative support and financial strength that will enable Rupert House to approach its next century with assurance.
Wishford’s founder and executive chairman Sam Antrobus stated that they are extremely discerning about the schools they include in their group and that Rupert House represents the first addition since 2018. He explained that they only collaborate with schools when there is a clear alignment in values and principles, and this was clearly evident with Rupert House. The school will preserve its distinctive character and methodology while Nick Armitage and his leadership team continue to guide its development. They will be positioned to contribute specialist knowledge across all areas needed to enhance and broaden the provision of excellent education. He expressed great enthusiasm about Rupert House becoming part of the Wishford organisation.
A communication from Wishford further noted that an ambitious improvement strategy is already underway and they are eager to support continued success. The school will gain access to extensive knowledge and capabilities from professionals throughout the organisation while also having the opportunity to share their own insights.
Consolidation between independent schools occurs regularly. Earlier this month, Abingdon School revealed plans to join with two preparatory schools in the town. Independent schools throughout the region are now entering into mergers as they attempt to strengthen their standing, with consolidation serving as a means of establishing greater stability.
