The Royal Mint has released a fresh 50p commemorative coin dedicated to The Lord of the Rings, giving enthusiasts the opportunity to acquire a new collectable item.
Wednesday’s unveiling coincided with the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s cinematic adaptation The Fellowship of the Ring hitting screens.
Produced alongside Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products, this represents the inaugural piece in a collection of seven coins that will honour the epic fantasy film trilogy throughout the coming three years, with subsequent releases aligned to the 25th anniversary celebrations of the remaining two instalments.
The One Ring, the pivotal artefact driving JRR Tolkien’s legendary narrative and an emblem of authority, sits at the heart of the coin’s design.
The fantasy author, responsible for The Lord of the Rings and its precursor The Hobbit, made his home in Oxford and participated in The Inklings literary collective, whose members gathered routinely at The Eagle and Child public house on St Giles. CS Lewis counted himself among this group’s regular attendees.
Royal Mint coin designer Thomas T Docherty created the reverse, or tails, face of the 50p piece, which showcases the Elvish script and Black Speech etched onto the Ring, conveying the inscription: One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
A selection of these 50p pieces will incorporate what the Mint described as an innovative design element.
When illumination catches the coin’s surface, a concealed image materialises: the Eye of Sauron, appearing from the void within the Ring’s centre.
Artisans at The Royal Mint engineered the coin’s surface to concentrate light in a meticulous fashion.
Rebecca Morgan, the Royal Mint’s director of commemorative coinage, expressed that even the most passionate collectors of The Fellowship could not have envisioned a coin of this nature.
To commemorate a quarter of a century since Peter Jackson initially transported Middle-earth to cinema audiences, The Royal Mint has revealed a collectable 50p coin honouring the milestone, Morgan stated.
Highlighting the caustic technology employed to unveil the hidden representation of the Eye of Sauron nestled within the One Ring, Morgan noted it represents an extraordinary achievement in British craftsmanship that enthusiasts must witness firsthand.
Regardless of whether one is a longtime devotee or a committed collector, this is a coin truly worth possessing, she added.
Each coin’s packaging will display a map of Middle-earth, allowing the full set to be showcased collectively or as individual pieces.
The Lord of the Rings 50p coin went on sale from 9am on May 20 via the Royal Mint’s online platform, with prices commencing at £15.
