A Banbury resident has credited her long life to her love of vegetables and remaining active as she marks her 101st birthday.
Edwina Fran, known as Judy, celebrated the milestone at Featherton House care home.
She was born on 8 April 1925 in Pembrokeshire and has lived a life defined by commitment and hard work.
Featherton House’s registered manager, Hilda Sanyika, said Judy has lived an exceptional life and given a great deal to others through both her professional career and voluntary efforts.
She constantly brings happiness and amusement, and the staff feel privileged to be part of her story.
The team was delighted to celebrate her 101st birthday with her and her relatives.
Judy began volunteering with the British Red Cross when she was 16, helping with patient care at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.
At 19, she joined an aid detachment as a full-time member, working with Sir Harold Gillies, a well-known figure in plastic surgery, to care for wounded servicemen and women during the Second World War.
After the war ended, she undertook training as a dental nurse and continued working in Fareham while also travelling to Harley Street in London.
She married William Stokes in 1953, just before he was sent to Singapore with the Royal Navy.
Despite her work commitments, Judy dedicated 65 years to the British Red Cross and was awarded the Badge of Honor for her commitment.
Her work included teaching first aid classes, supporting blood donation campaigns, and volunteering at the Red Cross Museum in Winchester.
She moved to Featherton House in January 2023 to be closer to her family.
