Oxford University Innovation has joined a collaborative initiative designed to accelerate the commercial development of scientific research.
The technology transfer organisation for the University of Oxford has been confirmed as a founding partner of CO:LABS, a newly established facility located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
The development specifically targets science and technology enterprises seeking connection, partnership and growth opportunities.
Other organisations participating as founding partners include The Rosalind Franklin Institute, Agilent and Venture Café.
Jim Stretton, who serves as managing director at the Harwell campus, explained that the initiative consolidates specialised expertise, advanced infrastructure and professional networks essential for science-based enterprises to progress.
He noted that Oxford University Innovation’s demonstrated ability to translate research outcomes into practical applications would enhance the facility’s offerings significantly, providing resident early-stage companies with commercial guidance and support structures necessary to develop concepts and expand operations.
As a founding partner, Oxford University Innovation will contribute its expertise in converting academic discoveries into market-ready ventures.
The organisation will deliver assistance to resident startups through educational programmes, practical sessions, individual coaching and professional mentoring.
The initiative aims to prepare emerging companies with the capabilities and understanding required to transform laboratory breakthroughs into commercially viable products, services and sustainable enterprises.
CO:LABS provides a collaborative setting for science and technology organisations, incorporating laboratory space, specialist equipment and entry to an extensive innovation network.
The facility accommodates the Motherlabs Accelerator, which supplies equipped CL2 laboratory facilities and shared resources tailored for early-stage ventures, alongside adaptable expansion space and purpose-built floors designed for growing organisations.
The Link functions as a central gathering space within the facility, featuring presentation areas, a dining venue, resource centre, meeting rooms and zones designated for collaborative work.
Mairi Gibbs, chief executive of Oxford University Innovation, observed that exceptional scientific achievement reaches its fullest potential when appropriate expertise and conditions align effectively.
She expressed enthusiasm about bringing the organisation’s track record of nurturing innovative concepts and emerging companies to the CO:LABS community, while simultaneously strengthening ties throughout Oxfordshire’s innovation landscape and improving accessibility of the university’s expertise for enterprises based at Harwell.
She indicated that collaboration within the facility would enable ambitious science-focused companies to develop promising research into products and services capable of generating substantial contributions to economic activity, society and environmental sustainability.
The inclusion of Oxford University Innovation enhances CO:LABS by integrating scientific capabilities with commercial knowledge to nurture forthcoming generations of science and technology businesses.
CO:LABS encompasses 120,000 square feet of laboratory space purposefully configured to support science enterprises through their initial phases and subsequent expansion.
The Harwell Science and Innovation Campus spans 700 acres and serves as a prominent centre for British research and development activities.
The site accommodates numerous scientific instruments, research institutions, commercial enterprises and specialist teams dedicated to advancing understanding and creating solutions addressing worldwide challenges.
Oxford University Innovation operates as a fully owned subsidiary of the University of Oxford and functions as the institution’s designated commercialisation partner.
