Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock marks 60th anniversary with special events

Published on

The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock has celebrated six decades of operation with a programme of special events and commemorations.

The institution officially opened on October 15, 1966, and has since established itself as a centre for examining the county’s heritage through rotating exhibitions, community activities and learning initiatives.

Situated within Fletchers House, a historic building with continuous occupation dating back to 1279, the venue has served visitors ranging from local families to organised school groups over multiple generations.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, who serves as Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, offered remarks marking the occasion.

He noted that the institution had spent sixty years bringing the county’s past to audiences and creating enduring experiences for visitors across different age groups.

He described the anniversary as an opportunity to recognise what gives the museum its distinctive character, from its varied collections and changing displays to programming designed for families and educational establishments.

He attributed the venue’s accomplishments to the commitment of employees, volunteers, the Friends group and others who have contributed support throughout its history.

The museum underwent significant challenges during the early 1990s, when financial constraints threatened its continued operation.

A successful campaign mobilised public backing that helped secure National Lottery funding for extensive refurbishment works.

The renovation introduced additional gallery spaces alongside refreshed visitor amenities.

A notable development occurred in 2009 when the institution acquired a Megalosaurus specimen along with fossilised dinosaur footprints, which were incorporated into an outdoor Dinosaur Garden feature.

The scheme incorporated plant species from the Jurassic period and attracted coverage from national media outlets, with support from television naturalist Chris Packham.

Annual attendance now stands at approximately 115,000 guests, with the venue providing exhibitions and engagement opportunities suitable for visitors of all ages.

To observe the milestone anniversary, the museum has assembled a dedicated retrospective presentation showcasing its history and accomplishments.

Additionally, a commemorative video has been produced with financing provided by the Friends of The Oxfordshire Museum, incorporating recollections and perspectives from those connected to the institution.

Edward Dowler, who chairs the Friends of the Oxfordshire Museum group, contributed comments on the anniversary.

He noted that the organisation had supported the museum and its activities for more than half of its sixty-year existence.

He expressed satisfaction at having contributed funding towards a special film for the birthday observances and at helping to highlight the museum’s heritage and the individuals who have contributed to its story.

The museum’s education department has also received recognition this year, securing two national heritage education awards.

The department hosted more than 3,300 participants through summer holiday programming alone.

The 2026 Open Art Competition remains on show through November 1, displaying works created by Oxfordshire residents responding to the theme of celebration.

Information regarding visitor arrangements and membership opportunities is available through the museum’s official website.
