Badenoch attacks government plan to house 1,250 asylum seekers near Piddington

The Conservative Party leader has challenged Downing Street’s strategy for accommodating asylum seekers in rural Oxfordshire.

Kemi Badenoch voiced alarm at the administration’s handling of the migration situation, specifically highlighting the consequences for modest settlements such as Piddington.

The Home Office disclosed its proposals in June for housing at three Ministry of Defence properties, including the MoD Bicester Site A situated within the Bicester Garrison complex, positioned between Piddington and Upper Arncott.

Badenoch drew attention to this Oxfordshire community, where officials intend to accommodate 1,250 male asylum seekers at an adjacent Ministry of Defence facility.

Her assessment indicated that this arrangement would require a settlement of approximately 400 inhabitants to absorb a population equivalent to four times its current size.

She cautioned that this represented merely the initial phase of a broader initiative that would introduce substantial numbers of asylum seekers to small towns and villages throughout Britain.

Andy Burnham said last month that Britain cannot operate a system whereby only economically disadvantaged or working-class localities receive refugees and asylum seekers.

Badenoch stated that the implication from Burnham’s Labour administration was unmistakable: residents of Piddington, Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire, and numerous other picturesque villages near RAF installations do not constitute Labour supporters, therefore they must simply accept the situation.

This remarks followed Burnham’s assertion last month that Britain cannot maintain a system in which exclusively deprived or working-class regions absorb refugees and asylum seekers.

She contended that this stance resembled a proposal put forward by Reform UK’s Nigel Farage, which involved establishing migrant detention facilities in constituencies that voted Green while excluding areas represented by Reform MPs.

Concerns were also voiced regarding the reopening of the Bell Hotel in Epping as accommodation for asylum seekers, a choice she stated had produced safety anxieties within the neighbourhood following an incident involving a migrant.

Badenoch declared that no individual should be compelled to witness their local area transform into a prohibited zone without warning, where young women and children cannot feel secure.

Yet this is what Burnham is instructing vast segments of the nation to accept.

Additional criticism targeted the Government’s administration of the migration crisis, with the assertion that abandoning the Rwanda initiative had compromised attempts to discourage migrants from arriving.

Badenoch declared that the Conservative Party had revised its position and would now withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights to facilitate the rapid removal of individuals who entered the country illegally.

She concluded by reaffirming her dedication to bringing the nation together and providing a more promising future under Conservative governance, contrasting this with the methods advanced by competing political parties.

Piddington, the village near Bicester, has garnered worldwide press coverage through its campaign for independence from the United Kingdom in response to the proposals, with the story gaining traction after being shared and supported by Tesla and X proprietor Elon Musk.

Cherwell District Council has recently been divested of its authority over significant planning determinations, and development schemes within the Cherwell region can now circumvent local elected representatives, proceeding directly to the national planning inspectorate for approval.
