An entry-free gathering will provide local residents with an opportunity to gain further insight into the condition and prospects of their regional waterways.
West Oxfordshire District Council is organising Waterways Day 2026 at the Corn Exchange venue in Witney on Friday, October 9.
The occasion will unite specialists, groups and community members to examine subjects encompassing water contamination, flood concerns, farming practices and environmental restoration.
The programme will include a series of presentations and roundtable conversations, granting inhabitants the chance to pose queries and receive information directly from professionals involved in safeguarding rivers and streams.
Councillor Alistair Wray, the executive member responsible for environmental matters, explained that waterways hold considerable significance for West Oxfordshire’s neighbourhoods, natural surroundings and the district’s long-term prosperity.
He noted that numerous linked difficulties affect these water systems, ranging from contamination and construction consequences to flood risks, agricultural practices and the necessity of reviving natural habitats.
According to Councillor Wray, Waterways Day aims to consolidate these discussions and offer residents the chance to listen firsthand to those tackling these matters.
Subjects addressed throughout the event will cover the consequences of construction on water standards, contamination and responsibility, flood vulnerability and reduction approaches, plus the part played by farming operations and catchment collaborations in enhancing waterway health.
Every segment will include contributions from knowledgeable presenters followed by panel-based question-and-answer periods.
Visitors may additionally attend the Gallery section at the Corn Exchange between 10am and 5pm to engage with charities and bodies involved in waterway schemes, obtain materials and discover ways to participate.
