A teenager from Kent who completed a university degree at the age of 14 has spoken about her remarkable academic journey.
Vera Cree achieved a first-class Bachelor of Science in Information Systems from Middlesex University, finishing her studies before most of her peers had begun their GCSE examinations.
The young graduate’s parents, James and Deborah Cree, recalled recognising their daughter’s exceptional abilities when she was approximately three years old.
They observed that she consistently displayed intense curiosity about the world around her from an early age.
For the majority of her formative years, Vera resided in Indianapolis, where educators identified her intellectual capabilities and enrolled her in accelerated programmes from the age of eight.
Following engagement with an advanced curriculum focusing on science, mathematics and quantitative reasoning, she found the material insufficiently challenging and pursued multiple college-level courses.
The family relocated to England in 2023 to be nearer to Vera’s grandfather.
Having demonstrated proficiency at college standard, she received offers from several higher education institutions.
Deborah Cree, who works as an information technology consultant and is 44 years old, explained that her daughter had always exhibited a distinctive approach to learning.
She noted that Vera frequently grew restless when presented with content she had already mastered, as the material failed to match her level of comprehension.
The family supported her decision to attempt university-level study, and she subsequently accumulated sufficient academic credits to progress directly to degree level.
Vera received her degree on 26 June 2025, attended by family members including her younger twin sisters Debbie and Esther, who were both ten years old at the time.
Her father James, aged 49 and originally from California, works as a pastor.
He described the graduation ceremony as an extraordinarily proud occasion for the family, noting that witnessing his daughter receive her scroll from university officials was an unexpected but wonderful experience.
He added that while they had always anticipated she would perform well academically, they had never anticipated receiving a university qualification at such a young age.
The majority of Vera’s studies were conducted remotely, with her parents accompanying her whenever physical attendance was required.
The family expressed appreciation for Middlesex University’s approach to safeguarding throughout her time there.
Deborah Cree acknowledged that concerns about appropriate supervision remained present throughout the process, with the family maintaining regular check-ins.
She noted that balancing the need to prevent boredom while ensuring appropriate support required careful management.
Due to her age, participation in the social aspects typically associated with university life was limited, as fellow students were considerably older than her.
Despite these challenges, Vera pursued her interest in technology and software engineering throughout her education.
She participated in robotics activities at her secondary school.
Looking ahead, she aims to undertake doctoral research at Oxford University, with preliminary work beginning on a thesis examining artificial intelligence applications for those caring for autistic children.
Additionally, she is developing a project involving a wearable camera system designed to identify emotions through artificial intelligence.
She has also expressed interest in producing a musical album containing compositions about her religious beliefs.
