A government enforcement initiative has led to hundreds of businesses being publicly identified for breaching national minimum wage legislation.
Official figures from the Labour administration showed that 658 companies refunded roughly £4 million to more than 27,000 members of staff after compliance activity.
Among those named were well-known organisations such as the DIY retailer B&Q, a private healthcare company, and an NHS hospital trust.
Cabinet ministers declared their commitment to tackling wage exploitation, revealing that fines reaching £7 million had been imposed on companies found to be falling short of legal requirements.
The Business Secretary stated that ethical treatment of employees represented both a moral obligation and a commercial advantage, contributing to stronger business performance and economic expansion across all regions.
He indicated that most organisations already recognised this principle, and the government intended to provide comprehensive assistance to help them meet their legal duties.
The Secretary stated that failing to pay staff correctly would not be tolerated, and decisive action would continue to be taken against offenders.
The DIY retailer was discovered to have failed to pay £456,934 to 4,530 employees.
A representative for the company explained that the payment errors occurred unintentionally and stemmed from calculations related to location-based supplements provided in addition to base hourly rates.
All impacted workers received the full amounts owed during July 2025.
The healthcare organisation Elysium Healthcare Holdings Limited was identified for failing to pay £330,048 to 1,095 staff members.
The hospital trust St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group was found to owe £123,331 to 75 workers.
Support Staff Services Limited, based in Slough, had underpaid 323 employees by £119,715, while Forest Holidays Ltd fell short with 598 workers affected by a total shortfall of £100,308.
The Minister for the Future of Work declared that wage theft constituted a criminal offence, and the government would not permit employees to suffer due to their employers’ failure to comply with employment law.
She affirmed that ensuring workers received their legitimate earnings remained a priority, and organisations found wanting would face consequences.
The Minister called on all employers to examine their payroll systems immediately and contact the conciliation service Acas should they require guidance on meeting their obligations.
