The discount retail chain Poundland has been put up for sale by its current owner, little more than twelve months after being purchased for a nominal sum.

Private equity investment house Gordon Brothers has initiated a formal disposal process for the business, with expectations that a transaction could be finalized within a matter of weeks.

Advisory firm Alvarez and Marsal has been brought in to handle the sale and reach out to prospective purchasers, with the process having commenced on Wednesday according to informed sources.

Several interested parties have already signalled their intent to explore a deal, with TG Jones and Modella, the company behind Hobbycraft, among those reportedly having submitted initial approaches.

Gordon Brothers took control of Poundland for a single pound in June of the previous year and has since implemented a comprehensive transformation programme aimed at addressing substantial financial losses and navigating challenging trading conditions.

More than one hundred outlets have been shuttered across Britain as part of the operational overhaul.

The business has additionally streamlined its approach to pricing, reintroducing standardized grocery tiers at one, two and three pounds across its store network while implementing clearer pricing structures for general merchandise and apparel.

The changes received a broadly positive response from shoppers.

The disposal is anticipated to progress swiftly, with internal targets suggesting completion prior to the peak Christmas trading season.

A spokesperson for Poundland indicated that efforts would remain concentrated on the turnaround strategy through disciplined retail execution, emphasizing reduced pricing, revised product ranges and improved customer service.

The potential disposal coincides with Gordon Brothers’ broader efforts to restructure its retail holdings.

Earlier in the current year, the investment firm also secured the LK Bennett and Radley labels following their administration proceedings.
