Sir David Suchet stars as murder suspect in Ludwig Christmas special

The detective series Ludwig is returning for a festive special, with David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin reprising their roles alongside a host of well-known names from the entertainment industry.

The Christmas edition will feature appearances from several notable performers, including the distinguished actor famous for portraying one of television’s most iconic sleuths.

Sir David Suchet, known internationally for his portrayal of Hercule Poirot, will appear in the programme as a murder suspect rather than in his usual investigative role.

Series two of the acclaimed detective programme, which has previously received International Emmy recognition, continues to attract strong viewership across BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

Meanwhile, preparations are already underway for a third run of episodes.

The production originates from Big Talk Studios in partnership with That Mitchell and Webb Company, with additional involvement from BritBox and ZDF in a co-production arrangement.

The central characters of John Taylor, portrayed by Mitchell, Lucy Betts-Taylor, played by Maxwell Martin, young Henry Betts-Taylor, brought to life by Dylan Hughes, and DCI Russell Carter, performed by Dipo Ola, will be joined in the Christmas instalment by an impressive roster of guest performers.

Joining the established cast will be Flemyng, Wilkinson, Tyson, Roach, Smith-Bynoe, Staton, Price, Glaser and Rainsford.

Mitchell, who attended school in Abingdon before studying at Cambridge University, grew up near Oxford and developed an appreciation for classic detective dramas during his youth.

The narrative unfolds in the northern county of Yorkshire.

The hour-long festive episode follows the central characters as they check into an isolated hotel with a seasonal theme, seeking respite from their usual demands.

Their plans unravel when a power failure plunges the establishment into darkness, transforming their retreat into a confined setting where a murder investigation becomes necessary.

Stranded by severe winter conditions and unable to contact the wider world, those present at the hotel find themselves spending an evening in the company of an unknown killer.

As John becomes reluctantly involved in what proves to be an extraordinarily unusual case, the Taylor family must identify the perpetrator before the Christmas period arrives.

Foggin occupies the director’s chair for this production, having also been tasked with helming the upcoming third series.

Brotherhood serves as both writer and executive producer, with Allen and Welch also executive producing for Big Talk Studios.

Mitchell himself features among the executive producers, alongside Sussman and O’Connor.

BritBox is represented in an executive capacity by Schildhouse and Nye, while Wunn and Seyberth hold equivalent positions for ZDF.

Fallon produced the Christmas instalment, with Wilson serving as co-producer.

The festive episode forms part of the commission for the second series and falls under the remit of Petrie, who held the position of BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning at the time of commissioning.

Sharp acted as the commissioning editor for the corporation.

The production is made in association with ITV Studios, which manages distribution beyond the United Kingdom.

The initial three episodes of the current series remain accessible on BBC iPlayer, with the subsequent three instalments scheduled for release on the platform from the tenth of September.

Broadcast on BBC One occurs weekly on Thursday evenings in the nine o’clock slot.

Prior to his appointment at Hat Trick Productions, where he now serves in a new capacity, Petrie had confirmed the commissioning of this Christmas special while serving at the BBC.
