Council calls for East West Rail to include Northampton in service plans

Demands are mounting for additional direct rail services to the Universal theme park development currently under construction in the United Kingdom, after further postponements were announced regarding the launch of the new line.

West Northamptonshire Council, situated adjacent to the Oxfordshire boundary, dispatched correspondence to the transport secretary during June, petitioning for Northampton to be incorporated into passenger service provisions for the East West Rail initiative.

Although construction concluded in October 2024, the route has remained inaccessible to travellers.

The RMT union is now initiating preparations for strike action balloting, following an industrial dispute spanning two years with operating company Chiltern Railways.

The National Union of Rail Maritime and Transport Workers has alleged that Chiltern Railways has not offered definitive assurances regarding safe operational procedures and the critical safety function performed by the second crew member aboard services.

The voting process is scheduled to commence on September 3 and conclude on September 29.

The proposed entertainment complex in the vicinity of Bedford will lack its own railway station, despite projections estimating annual visitor numbers of 8.5 million upon the facility’s inauguration in 2031.

Should the ballot prove successful, industrial action could disrupt multiple routes operated by Chiltern, encompassing the Chiltern Main Line alongside connections between Stratford and Leamington, both of which rely upon train managers.

Services operating under driver-only arrangements would, however, remain unaffected by any potential strikes.

The union’s disagreement with Chiltern Railways originated more than twelve months prior, concerning the introduction of driver-only service models.

Northampton South Member of Parliament Mike Reader addressed the absence of theme park stops in parliamentary proceedings, cautioning that existing proposals risked the town being excluded from economic advantages associated with the development.

The projected venue near Bedford anticipates attracting 8.5 million guests annually following its 2031 inauguration.

The council, under Reform UK administration, highlighted that whilst freight operations serve Northampton Gateway, no provisions currently exist for passenger services to the town.

The authority commented that such exclusion places local inhabitants and commercial enterprises at a considerable disadvantage.

An additional connection could strengthen employment networks with Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire, and Oxford, alongside improving access to Luton Airport.

The council further contends this would elevate Northampton’s significance within the Oxford-Cambridge development corridor.

Presently, travellers must transfer at Bletchley to utilise East West Rail services traversing routes between Oxford and Cambridge.

Council leader Mark Arnull observed that Northampton already possesses operational railway infrastructure along this corridor, with freight traffic active, yet local residents remain unable to access passenger services.

The situation was deemed fundamentally inequitable.

He characterised the proposal as a rare chance to link communities with employment prospects, investment, and economic expansion, emphasising the importance of full participation.

A ministerial meeting was sought to examine mechanisms for integrating Northampton into planning frameworks so the area might fully capitalise on associated investment.

Earlier this month, the administration pledged £1.3 billion in financing for the resort development.

Resources will support improvements to local infrastructure and transportation networks to accommodate visitors arriving from throughout Britain and international destinations.
