The conservation charity is opening several historic estates across three counties at no charge during a national celebration of architectural and cultural heritage.

The initiative forms part of England’s annual Heritage Open Days festival, which sees thousands of organisations participating across the country to give visitors opportunities to engage with local history and overlooked stories.

Between September 11th and 20th, members of the public can explore properties throughout Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, and Oxfordshire, discovering regional narratives and significant sites.

The General Manager at National Trust Hughenden, Louise Walker, commented that the festival presents an excellent chance for individuals to uncover remarkable historical significance in their surrounding area.

She noted that whether someone holds a deep interest in local heritage or simply seeks a complimentary excursion with loved ones, the programme offers diverse experiences.

The current year’s theme highlights the significance of everyday narratives and the impact ordinary individuals have had on shaping communities.

Greys Court in Oxfordshire will welcome visitors without charge from September 14th through 16th.

The site will feature a live archaeological dig taking place on the upper lawn, with opportunities for guests to engage with researchers conducting the work.

Chastleton, a residence constructed in the Jacobean era, will provide complimentary access on September 19th between 1pm and 5pm.

The property houses nationally significant textile collections, scarce Jacobite glassware, and ancestral portraits.

In Buckinghamshire, Hughenden Manor will open its doors free of charge throughout the September 11th to 20th period.

The estate served as home to Benjamin Disraeli, who held the position of Queen Victoria’s preferred prime minister, and operated as a classified cartographic centre during the Second World War.

Visitors can also view works produced by local artists and craftspeople associated with the Buckinghamshire region.

Stowe Gardens will grant free entry to its 250 acres of designed landscape from September 11th to 20th.

On September 19th and 20th specifically, guests can tour the notable Gothic Temple, the estate’s parish church, the Temple of Concord and Victory, and Dido’s cave.

Cliveden, situated near Maidenhead, will offer complimentary access from September 14th to 18th.

The estate encompasses formal gardens and woodland areas, accompanied by guided tours and walks covering topics such as hidden aspects of the estate, general history, garden design, photography, the chapel, collections, and conservation efforts.

Waddesdon Manor, originally constructed in 1874 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, will provide free entry on September 19th and 20th.

Windmill Hill, a structure recognised for its architectural innovation that typically remains closed to visitors, will also be accessible during this period.

The National Trust has coordinated Heritage Open Days since 2011, with funding assistance from participants in the Postcode Lottery.

The yearly festival animates history through thousands of complimentary events managed by local communities throughout England.
