A significant milestone is approaching for a group of former pupils from John Mason School, as they prepare to celebrate six decades since beginning their secondary education.
The reunion will take place at a venue in Abingdon on September 14, bringing together roughly 30 individuals who first enrolled at the institution in the autumn of 1966.
This occasion marks exactly 60 years since the cohort commenced their studies at what was then called John Mason High School, a mere five weeks following England’s triumph at Wembley in the World Cup final.
John Walker has taken on the responsibility of arranging the event, building upon previous successful gatherings held in 1994, 2005, and 2007.
Efforts to reach all former classmates have yielded positive responses, though communication has not yet been established with more than 50 members of the original 129-student group.
The incoming year group of 1966 was organised into four distinct form classes, each overseen by a designated tutor.
Of those who began their studies that autumn, 58 individuals elected to remain at the institution for sixth-form qualifications, a period that coincided with the opening of additional accommodation and improved resources at the school.
Mr Walker himself joined the student body in September 1967 and was among numerous pupils whose fathers served with the Royal Air Force, predominantly stationed at the nearby airbase.
The geographic spread of those planning to attend spans several European nations, including Sweden, Wales, Scotland, and Belgium, while former classmates unable to participate have settled as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, the United States, India, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands, in addition to Cornwall.
Residents of the Oxfordshire area remain strongly represented among those confirming attendance, with almost half of the expected participants continuing to reside within a 20-mile radius of Abingdon.
When the cohort first assembled in 1966, pupils originated from across the town and surrounding settlements such as Cumnor, Drayton, Kennington, Kingston Bagpuize, Steventon, Sutton Courtney, and Appleton.
