Oxfam shop on Stert Street, Abingdon, calls for donations for Second Hand September

Second-hand retailers are playing a significant role in combating the environmental problems associated with disposable clothing.

Oxfam is encouraging members of the public to contribute to its annual Second Hand September initiative, which promotes both donating and purchasing pre-owned garments.

Personnel at the Oxfam establishment in Abingdon, situated on Stert Street, are appealing to local residents to hand over any garments that have remained unworn during the previous twelve months.

The manager of the Abingdon branch, Michila Wearn, noted that acquiring second-hand items has become increasingly convenient, while emphasising the distinctive pleasure of browsing through a charity retail outlet.

She observed that the uncertainty of discovering an unexpected item often constitutes the most rewarding aspect of the experience.

Wearn additionally drew attention to the ecological advantages associated with purchasing pre-owned garments, stating that charity retail environments contribute to extending the lifespan of clothing items and represent a meaningful contribution towards addressing the challenges posed by the throwaway fashion sector.

Grant will feature on promotional materials displayed in Oxfam locations throughout Oxford throughout September.

Oxfam’s head of retail operations, Rachel Cosgrove-Pearce, described the organisation as the pioneering retailer in the second-hand fashion space.

She pointed out that the organisation has been offering quality pre-owned garments since 1947, with this continued prosperity attributable to public patronage of neighbourhood branches.

Cosgrove-Pearce also underscored the significance of the campaign, suggesting that Second Hand September serves as a valuable prompt that modest adjustments to purchasing habits can yield substantial environmental benefits.

She explained that donating unused garments or selecting pre-owned clothing assists in minimising textile waste, provides backing for Oxfam’s charitable activities, and contributes to environmental preservation.
