Didcot and Wantage MP joins Wallingford Mill Brook restoration campaign

A Member of Parliament has pledged to address contamination affecting a historic waterway in Wallingford, as community efforts intensify to address what advocates describe as severe ecological damage.

Olly Glover, representing Didcot and Wantage, participated in an inspection alongside representatives from town, county, and district councils, the Environment Agency, Thames Water, and local community groups.

The delegation examined the chalk-bed stream that originates in Blewbury.

Half a century ago, the stream served as a vibrant community space where residents engaged in water-based recreation.

However, the waterway has dramatically deteriorated, now serving as a repository for waste and pollution.

In February, local residents raised serious concerns about the stream’s condition.

They reported overwhelming stench, insect infestations, and visible white foam between Fir Tree Avenue and the Sports Park.

Environmental authorities verified the presence of sewage-related fungal contamination.

Responding to these issues, community members established the Wallingford Mill Brook Restoration Group.

Their efforts gained political support when Mr Glover conducted a site visit in July, which resulted in a collaborative commitment to address the stream’s degradation.

An August meeting demonstrated promising cooperation, with stakeholders agreeing to pursue sustainable restoration strategies.

Mike Acreman, a key campaign advocate, expressed cautious optimism about the potential environmental recovery.

Mr Glover emphasised the collective determination to tackle pollution sources comprehensively.

The historic waterway, once integral to the town’s infrastructure, had fallen into significant disrepair, with tests revealing critical water quality concerns.

Laboratory analysis conducted over eight months identified elevated concentrations of E.coli bacteria, originating from animal and human waste, alongside high Biological Oxygen Demand levels indicating substantial organic matter decomposition.

Town Councillor Acreman described discovering the stream’s degraded state as deeply alarming.

Collaborative action now focuses on reversing the stream’s decline, with multiple organisations committed to implementing targeted restoration measures.

The proposed solutions aim to address the complex environmental challenges through coordinated intervention.
