Concerns have emerged regarding proposed construction projects in West Oxfordshire and their potential impact on flood vulnerability in the area.
Bampton Parish Council has submitted its response to West Oxfordshire District Council regarding the Oxfordshire Local Plan, which establishes guidelines for residential, commercial and transport development across the county.
The framework provides local authorities with greater authority over construction projects while ensuring that transportation networks, educational institutions, medical services and additional public amenities are coordinated alongside population growth.
Although the parish council expressed approval for the general approach of the West Oxfordshire Local Plan 2043, significant objections were raised concerning construction schemes situated upstream that could have consequences for Bampton.
The consultation period for the draft strategy extends until early October, outlining strategic objectives for residential, commercial and infrastructure expansion throughout the district.
Representatives from the parish council indicated apprehension regarding the scale of construction activity and supporting facilities proposed for Carterton, specifically referencing Policy CA8 concerning Land East of Brize Norton.
According to the council, every project in these locations sits upstream from the waterways that pass through Bampton, necessitating substantial investment in sanitation infrastructure and stormwater management systems to prevent increased and more regular flooding incidents affecting the community.
The local authority indicated general endorsement of proposals in proximity to the village itself, albeit with certain stipulations.
The council intends to endorse implementation of Local Plan 2043 provided that targets for the development timeline are made more rigorous and that any schemes granted approval during the transitional phase are deducted from the overall development quota.
Council representatives emphasized that the strategy must now proceed to completion with its guidelines rigorously enforced.
They noted that the completed draft had incorporated all previously submitted comments and objections.
