Oxfordshire groups invited to apply for £770,000 fund to help residents stay independent

Local organisations have the opportunity to secure financial support for initiatives designed to enhance resident wellbeing and maintain independence within Oxfordshire communities.

A total sum exceeding £770,000 has been allocated through the Oxfordshire County Council Community Capacity Fund, with individual grants reaching up to £20,000 for groups delivering services that enable residents to remain active, socially connected and self-sufficient.

The funding initiative forms part of the council’s Oxfordshire Way strategy, which focuses on supporting individuals to reside comfortably in their own neighbourhoods for extended periods.

Rebekah Fletcher, cabinet member for adult services at Oxfordshire County Council, commented that neighbourhood organisations frequently identify emerging requirements and provide immediate, empathetic assistance.

She noted that this financial provision enables community-based entities to expand their concepts, engage additional residents and improve daily experiences for those who might otherwise experience loneliness or difficulty obtaining necessary help.

An allocation surpassing £500,000 is accessible via Oxfordshire Community Foundation, with grants ranging between £5,000 and £20,000.

The application period spans four weeks and is currently accepting submissions.

A supplementary funding source totalling £271,057.50 will be distributed through Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action in collaboration with Community First Oxfordshire.

These smaller grants, capped at £5,000, will become available on Tuesday, October 6, and will remain open until the complete allocation has been distributed.

During the previous year, the Community Capacity Fund backed 38 initiatives throughout Oxfordshire, positively impacting hundreds of inhabitants through diverse activities encompassing theatrical productions, musical performances, counselling services, horticultural projects, heated communal areas and sporting pursuits such as pickleball.

Eighty-six organisations received the smaller grant awards last year, delivering accessible and inclusive activities within local neighbourhoods.

Ms Fletcher stated that whether providing nourishment, a friendly reception, theatrical workshops, gardening collectives or opportunities to explore novel experiences, such activities can prove essential for vulnerable residents.

She explained that these programmes assist participants in developing self-assurance, establishing friendships and accessing appropriate help when circumstances require.

She expressed enthusiasm for organisations supporting community wellbeing, independence and social cohesion to submit applications, describing the funding as an excellent chance to transform constructive concepts into tangible outcomes.

The Chipping Norton Theatre exemplifies the fund’s positive influence, having sustained theatrical workshops for neurodivergent adults and those with learning disabilities.

One attendee, who previously remained non-verbal, now participates in public performances on stage.

Witney Community Meal, another beneficiary, distributes meals each Thursday from the High Street Methodist Church, tackling food insecurity and loneliness whilst providing volunteering positions, including opportunities suited to neurodiverse individuals.

Organisations seeking grants between £5,000 and £20,000 should verify their eligibility and file an expression of interest through the Oxfordshire Community Foundation portal by Monday, October 5.

Groups applying for grants up to £5,000 can obtain additional information via OCVA and CFO.
