Taxi drivers celebrate Oxford Botley Road reopening after 3.5 years

Cab drivers in Oxford have welcomed the reopening of Botley Road, which had forced them to travel approximately six miles out of their way to bypass the roadworks.

Zulfiqur Khan, a taxi driver with three and a half decades of experience in the city, described the closure as particularly challenging, especially when trying to explain the situation to visitors from the United States and mainland Europe.

One American tourist was reportedly astonished by the inconvenience.

Another driver noted that the construction project at Botley Road had been ongoing for three and a half years, necessitating the substantial detour.

The route became accessible again on Sunday, September 20, bringing relief to local runners, pedestrians and drivers alike.

The closure began in April 2023, during Rishi Sunak’s tenure as Prime Minister, when the social media platform now called X was still operating under its previous name and Tottenham Hotspur had recently dismissed Antonio Conte while heading towards an eighth-place Premier League finish.

The initiative to replace the railway bridge encountered multiple setbacks, with projected expenses climbing from £161m to £237m.

Khan expressed that the reopening would significantly simplify daily routines for those affected.

Since the closure took effect, Oxford has introduced a congestion charge.

A trial programme using traffic filters is set to replace this system.

According to county council officials, from September 28 private car drivers will no longer have the option to pay £5 to pass through the filters.

Vehicles displaying valid permits and all other categories of transport will retain unrestricted passage through these points.
