Deddington Farmers’ Market has achieved a significant anniversary milestone after a quarter of a century of operation.
The monthly event takes place in the Market Square on the fourth Saturday and has expanded to become Oxfordshire’s biggest monthly market, drawing over 2,000 visitors each time and featuring approximately 40 trader stalls.
Tei Willox, who serves as chair of the market, described the occasion as a celebration of enduring community spirit, noting that every individual who has contributed over the 25-year history has played a part in building the market’s success.
The milestone was compared to a silver wedding anniversary, symbolising the lasting strength and resilience of the venture.
The market was originally established before being relaunched in 2001 by the late Charles Newey, who initiated the revival following the foot and mouth crisis that severely impacted the farming sector.
The market has accumulated several accolades throughout its operation, including winning the Oxfordshire Farmers’ Market of the Year title for six consecutive years and being named Farmers’ Market of the Year 2025 by LuxLife.
The vast majority of traders operate from locations within 30 miles of Deddington, and prospective new vendors are subject to a thorough vetting procedure that incorporates taste testing before approval to trade.
A diverse selection of products is available, spanning fresh produce including meat and vegetables alongside baked goods, locally brewed beverages, and dishes representing international cuisines.
The market functions as a community interest company and operates entirely through voluntary effort.
A substantial proportion of its revenue is directed back into the local area each year, with over £60,000 distributed to parish groups and projects since its establishment.
Recipient organisations include the village nursery, primary school, library, and various charitable causes operating within Deddington.
