Police facial recognition technology scanned 15,628 individuals on Witney High Street during a single deployment lasting four hours.

The operation, conducted by Thames Valley Police, took place between 10.30am and 2.30pm on Wednesday, September 16.

The mobile unit, equipped with a camera mounted atop a parked van, captured and analysed the faces of pedestrians passing through the area.

Three scans generated confirmed alerts, resulting in one arrest.

The system cross-references captured faces against a database containing images of individuals sought by police.

Councillor David Edwards-Hughes, chairman of Witney Town Council, stated that supporting law enforcement efforts with modern technology to apprehend wanted criminals and ensure public safety aligns with Conservative policy objectives.

He noted that officers present in the town centre on the day adopted an engaging approach, communicating with members of the public and explaining the operational procedures.

According to the council chairman, concerns from residents regarding new technology are understandable, though operational safeguards ensure that images of individuals not appearing on any watchlist are erased from the system immediately.

He emphasised that improving public comprehension of these protective measures would be essential for sustaining confidence while enabling police to maintain security within the town.

The technology was initially deployed in Oxfordshire on Cornmarket Street in Oxford during December 2025.

The system is designed to identify individuals whose mugshots appear in police records, enabling officers positioned nearby to make arrests.

Faces of members of the public who are not wanted or known to police are automatically and instantaneously removed from the database following scanning.
