RMT to protest at Marylebone over driver-only train services row with Chiltern Railways

Published on

The RMT union is preparing to stage a protest at Marylebone station in London on September 21, targeting Chiltern Railways over an unresolved disagreement concerning the new East West Rail corridor.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers has maintained a prolonged disagreement with Chiltern Railways regarding the introduction of driver-only services, describing such operations as unsafe and controversial.

A potential breakthrough had emerged in the stalemate that prevented the commencement of new train services between Oxford and Milton Keynes.

The rail link connecting Oxford to Milton Keynes has been fully constructed for approximately two years, yet commercial passenger services have yet to commence operations due to an ongoing dispute regarding the staffing arrangements made by Chiltern Railways.

Beyond the track being operational for two years, infrastructure developments including new stations at Winslow and additional platforms at Bletchley High Level have also been finalised.

Forty-five locomotive engineers have been appointed for the forthcoming service, though no guards have been employed.

These crew members serve essential functions in ensuring the safe, lawful, and efficient movement of passenger trains.

The demonstration scheduled for Monday follows the possibility of industrial action.

RMT members are eligible to participate in a strike vote from September 3, with the ballot scheduled to conclude on September 29.
